“Woman” is already an amazing song. What if there is an additional, deeper meaning? In 2004 while driving across the US on my book tour, I had a lot of time to think, reflect, and listen to music. One of the CDs I had with me was “Lennon Legend: The Very Best Of John Lennon”. At one point, while in a reflective state, John Lennon’s “Woman” came on. As listening to it, I had a rather profound insight: John Lennon could be singing about Mother Earth! Granted, his intentions may have been to embrace all that is woman, specifically Yoko Ono, but after having this insight I couldn’t help but notice how his words took on additional profound meaning for me while listening to the song with that in mind. Tears came to my eyes. I changed my CD player to “repeat-single” and listened to the song over and over again. After listening to Woman many times with a “different” ear, I then noticed something in the song that I had not noticed before and was in disbelief! It was at the beginning of the song. I immediately restarted the song. Then restarted it again and again. The sound in my van stereo did not separate the subtle words well, but I had to make sure of what I was hearing. After having the insight of the song being about Mother Earth, I thought I heard John Lennon saying, before the start of the main lyrics, “the other half of the sky”. I may not know exactly what his intentions were, but, to me, “the other half of the sky” is Mother Earth. I understand Native Americans refer to Mother Earth and Father Sky. The other half of the sky is Mother Earth! To me, this was a gentle exclamation point, a synchronicity, to my insight of the song. The only problem was that, as hard as I tried to listen and adjust my van’s stereo, I could not confirm those words. I was somewhere in the west-middle of the country traveling west on I-90 or I-94. Once I reached my home in Seattle, I put the CD in my home stereo and listened to it again, but this time with better clarity (and no road noise). His words are “for the other half of the sky”. I also looked up the lyrics online. Web sites that included the whispered lyrics at the beginning also confirmed the lyrics. According to Wikipedia.com:
"Woman" is a song written and performed by John Lennon from his 1980 album Double Fantasy. Written by Lennon, it is an ode to his wife Yoko Ono, which is introduced by Lennon whispering, "For the other half of the sky ...", a paraphrase of a Chinese proverb, once used by Mao Zedong. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman_%28John_Lennon_song%29
Women are amazing to me! In addition to doing so many other things, they can bring new life into this world! That’s the ultimate of “woman”: the ability to carry and raise a new life; motherhood! Taking that a step higher, the ultimate mother (woman) is Mother Earth. She carries, feeds, and nourishes all of us! Without her, we would all perish! And how do so many of us humans treat her? With all the current problems on this planet, such as pollution, warfare, clearcutting, strip mining, and extinction, etc., I believe the answer is clear! We are poisoning and raping, even killing, the very planet that sustains us.
Please listen to the song “Woman” and read the lyrics as the song plays, with one difference: Please listen to the song as though John Lennon were singing about Mother Earth. Try it! The lyrics are below. Consider purchasing your own MP3 of the song or watch it on the internet.

Lyrics:
(For the other half of the sky)
Woman I can hardly express
My mixed emotions at my thoughtlessness
After all I'm forever in your debt
And woman I will try to express
My inner feelings and thankfulness
For showing me the meaning of success
Ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Woman I know you understand
The little child inside of the man
Please remember my life is in your hands
And woman hold me close to your heart
However distant don't keep us apart
After all it is written in the stars
Ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Well
Woman please let me explain
I never meant to cause you sorrow or pain
So let me tell you again and again and again
I love you, yeah, yeah
Now and forever
I love you, yeah, yeah
Now and forever
I love you, yeah, yeah
Now and forever
I love you, yeah, yeah
